President Buhari extends return to Nigeria to complete medical tests

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has informed the National Assembly on Sunday that he is extending his leave in Britain to complete his medical tests. A statement from the presidency did not state when he will return to the country. “President Muhammadu Buhari has written to the National Assembly today, February 5, 2017, informing of his desire to extend his leave in order to complete and receive the results of a series of tests recommended by his doctors. “The President had planned to return to Abuja this evening, but was advised to complete the test cycle before returning. The notice has since been dispatched to the Senate President, and Speaker, House of Representatives,” the statement said. 74-year-old President Buhari left Nigeria to Britain last month on a 10-day leave for medical checkup and was expected to return on Monday, February 6. This is the second time the president has flown to London for medical check-up after he received treatment in June 2016 for an ear infection.

Tension in Abuja as pro-Buhari protesters clash with #OneVoiceNigeria

There was a mild tension at the Unity Fountain in Abuja after scores of pro-Buhari protesters met with other Nigerians under the aegis of #OneVoiceNigeria rally on Monday, February 6 The pro-Buhari activists had arrived at the proposed venue of the #OneVoiceNigeria march long before the other protesters.
However, immediately Nigerians from the anti-Buhari’s government group started coming, the pro-Buhari group started chanting: “Buhari will come back alive”, “We believe in Buhari”, “Nigerians are fully with you sir”. But, not perturbed by the drama exhibited by the pro-Buhari campaign group, the #IStandWithNigeria group began its own chants. The group members started with allegations against the pro-Buhari group. They said: “They have given you N500 each to come and protest”, “Each of here can feed you all”.

Pastor arrested at the airport for allegedly planning to overthrow president

A Zimbabwean pastor, Evan Mawarire, has been arrested yesterday, February 1, at the airport for planning to overthrow President Robert Mugabe's government after calling for protests. Reuters reports that Mawarire was arrested at the airport when he flew home from the United States. This is the second time he would be arrested. He was previously arrested and charged last July, but was freed by a magistrate's court which said police had not followed procedure. When he was freed by the court in July, police had said they still wanted to file more charges against Mawarire. He travelled to South Africa and then the United States, where he had been living with his family since July. His absence drew condemnation from supporters, who accused him of abandoning them when his leadership was needed. Mawarire's lawyer, Harrison Nkomo, claimed that the pastor had been arrested at Harare's airport and was taken to the capital's central police station. Confirming the arrest, the police spokeswoman, Charity Charamba, said the pastor had an outstanding warrant after failing to appear in court last year. She did not provide more details. "The law will always catch up with you even if you go away. Mawarire had a warrant of arrest against him," Charamba said. Mawarire became popular after posting a video online last year which went viral. In the video, he's seen ranting about the state of Zimbabwe and urging citizens to hold the government to account.

Nigerian University finds cure for HIV/AIDS

A Nigerian university professor, Francis Otunta of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, has claimed to have have discovered a drug for the treatment and cure of HIV/AIDS.
Prof.Maduike Ezeibe The Vice Chancellor of the institution located at Umudike in Abia state, announced the discovery of a drug which he claims is potent in the cure of the epidemic. Otunta told newsmen at the university campus on Wednesday, February 1, that the finding followed years of scientific research by the institution. He said that the breakthrough was made by Prof Maduike Ezeibe, a researcher in the university. According to him, Ezeibe had presented the drug to the University management, Senate and Council, where he explained the processes he went through to arrive at his finding. The VC also said that Ezeibe had equally presented the drug to his colleagues in the medical field and nobody had contradicted his finding. “Prof. Ezeibe is a researcher in Veterinary Medicine and one may wonder how he discovered a drug to cure a human ailment,” he said. He commended Ezeibe for the breakthrough, saying: “He has brought honour to the University and we are proud of him.” Otunta said that the university was in the process of mass producing the drug for further clinical trials on persons living with HIV/AIDS in the country. Ezeibe, who is a professor of Veterinary Medicine and Clinical Virology, said that the drug was produced with Aluminum Silicate and Magnesium Silicate (Synthetic Aluminum-Magnesium Silicate). He said that the two minerals “are already in use as medicines for the treatment of various animal and human diseases”. He said that 10 persons living with the disease, “who volunteered’’, were made to apply through their doctor to the VC. “They were treated daily with the Medicinal Synthetic Aluminum-Magnesium Silicate (50 mg/kg),” he said. Ezeibe said that the volunteers were subjected to monthly tests for viral loads and CD4-lymphocyte counts. “With the antiviral effects of the medicine, its ability to reach all cells (as nanoparticles) and the lymphocytes, there is no more hiding place (sanctuary) for HIV,” he said. He said that the medicine had been used to potentiate Ampicilin, Chloroquine, Piperazine and Sulphadimidin, among others, and could be a major foreign exchange earner for Nigeria, if approved by relevant authorities. According to him, “local and international medical companies will find the product as a veritable raw material”. Ezeibe said that he presented the research findings to the World Virology Conference in Atlanta in 2015, and Antonio (Texas) in 2016. Besides, he said that the results of the laboratory tests had been published in many international scientific journals, including the British Journal of Medicine and Medical Research, among several others. He said that he is also about to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with a U.S.-based Scientific Research Publishing, publishers of World Journal of AIDS, for the publication of his book “How I came about the cure for HIV/AIDS”. Ezeibe, who said that the medicine was patented in August 2014 in Nigeria, called on the Federal Government to help him to secure international patency for the drug. He said: “If commercialised, the Medicinal Synthetic Aluminum-Magnesium Silicate would become an alternative for petroleum to the Nigerian economy.” While the professor may be entitled to his claim, hundreds of such claims are announced every year by scientists claiming to have found a cure to the deadly disease. However, there are standards criteria which demands rigorous clinical tests which have to be verified by various layers of health organisations. But in this case, none have been reported, so it is likely that the discovery is fake as nothing is yet confirmed. The Nigerian minister of health, has also denied knowledge of the claim.

Ezenwafor David noted that "Hausa/fulani promising some igbo idiotic elites empty 2023 presidency to sabotage the Biafran struggle. Well, biafran youths have taken a stand." Handwriting is boldly written on the wall." Obasi Eke Eme was of the notion that "A Frog Does Not Run In The Day Time In Vain;something Is After It.Uba Is One Of The Thieves." Okechukwu Okeke said: "Nigerian politicians are like prostitutes, they have neither political ideology nor conviction. They in it for the loot and follow any party in power to ensure the loot will continue to flow." Marian Jaja Egwoh said: "The caption should be political prostitution. Yes becos they re after their pocket. That is to tell you the type of ppl we call the elite in Nigeria. Am glad those bad eggs re leaving pdp. Tunde Tunde said: "They are all running away from being probe we know it otherwise what is the different between APC and PDP, the same criminals running to hide in APC." Amechi Amah said: "These are people who want to rule the people by all cost, just for personal interest. Rulership is different from leadership. Unfortunately, they will continue to fail. They are political prostitutes who want to overload their pockets." Adding: "You want to lead the people, stay put, pay the price and you will scale through." Kemakolam Jonathan Eboh was of the opinion that "Two Party System is the best for this country. With it irresponsible politicians could be retired because the Electoral Law will ban them from cross carpeting. Freedom of association as enshrined in our constitution shouldn't apply to them otherwise our Democracy will be in danger." Onyebuchi Patrick Ikekamma said: "Cheap politicians are like Cameleon. They are constantly changing colours. All that glitters is not gold. These are hawkers, Nnamani, Rochoas. Iwuanyanwu, Orji Uzo and you can name them. Igbos are not cultured. They are now beggar politicians. It's unfortunate. There is nothing like Igbo philosophy nor Igbo identity. No wonder Nnamdi Kanu is a martyr." Wisdom Asuquo Asuquo said: "They have deceived Igbo again. Look if Igbos are not united and form strong opposition to the Nigerian government ,they will never rule Nigeria again" Segun Anifowose said: "It clearly shows how unreliable an average Nigerian politician could be. It also shows how myopic they are when it comes to political ideology. It equally shows their moral bankruptcy.'" Samuel Gimba noted that "There is nothing dynamic in nigeria politics, nigeria politics is worst in africa and the world at large, because nigeria politicians lack idealogy, common sense and direction."

Amaraizu said:“The Enugu State Command of the Nigeria Police Force through its operatives of the 9th Mile Division, today, 6th December, 2016, nabbed a suspected notorious gun runner who allegedly supplied AK-47 rifle to one herdsman, Ibrahim Adamu, earlier arrested by the Command. “Suspect who gave his name as one Alhaji Samaila Garuba, aka Bakassi, was earlier implicated by Ibrahim Adamu as the one that sold the AK-47 rifle to him. “Garuba escaped when he got the information about the arrest of Ibrahim Adamu. “His luck however ran out when intelligence information by the operatives paid off as he was trailed to a motor park situated at 9th Mile in Enugu early this morning, where he was nabbed after several efforts by him to escape.” Adamu who implicated Garuba hailed from Nasarawa State and was arrested with an AK-47 assault rifle and 24 rounds of live ammunition in a bush in Affa community. Igbos at War: Governor Ikpeazu deals Rochas big blow

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia state, has lashed out at Governor Rochas Okorocha - The Abia state governor has rejected Okorocha's hand of brotherhood, as the Imo state governor urges Southeastern governors to join APC - Okezie says Abia is a PDP state, even as Okorocha agrees his call was ill-timed Dr Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia state, has reiterated that he remains a loyal and committed member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

He spoke in response to claim by Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, that three Sout-East Governors are preparing to join the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
Okorocha made the comment at a meeting of all APC leaders in the zone, held at the Imo International Convention Centre (IICC) on Saturday.

But Ikpeazu, through his Chief Press Secretary, Enyinnaya Appolos, urged his loyalists, associates, Abians and all Nigerians to disregard the rumor that he was planning to defect to APC.

“Governor Okezie Ikpeazu is not currently in the mood for party politics,” the CPS said in a statement made available to Daily Post Monday night.

“He is in the good governance mood with focus on delivering massive dividends of democracy to Abia electorate that voted massively for him in 2015 to become the 4th democratically elected governor of God’s Own State of Abia, on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“Abia is a PDP state and Governor Ikpeazu is not just a card-carrying member of the PDP in Abia, he is the leader of the party in the state and one of the current pillars of the party in Nigeria today. He is comfortable in PDP”.

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State has back-pedalled on his declaration that his other South East Governors were on the verge of defecting to joining him in the All Progressive Congress (APC).
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors, including Dave Umahi of Ebony State and Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia as well as Willie Obiano had denied Okorocha’s claims.

Reacting to the governors’ denial while speaking with State House correspondents after a meeting with Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, in his office, Okorocha said he may have spoken too early because the governors were not yet ready to defect.

“I don’t think it is true, but if it is true, it is probably because it is not time. It could be because I spoke when they were not yet ready,” Okorocha said.
On his leadership quality which Obiano had questioned, he said, “It is not about Rochas Okorocha, I am a governor.”

On the call that Ndigbo should produce the President in 2019, he reiterated that the South East should aspire to the Presidency after the Muhammadu Buhari’s era.

“I think we should support this government. President Muhammadu Buhari has a tenure to work for, four years or eight years according to the zoning arrangement and everybody should follow the zoning although I am not an advocate of zoning.”

He said “the APC as a party is strong in the South East. We are trying to rebuild the party and redefine leadership so there will be no confusion."

CSO writes open letter to Father Mbaka, TB Joshua, others over Apostle Suleman

Editor's note: The executive secretary of a civil society in Nigeria, Centre for Social Justice, Equity and Transparency (CESJET), Ikpa Isaac has written an open letter to Reverend Father Ejike Mbaka, Temitope Joshua and other men of God in Nigeria.
Ikpa in his letter called on the men of God to intervene and caution other clerics against the use of hate speeches in Nigeria.
Ikpa's open letter comes on the heels of the comment made by the founder of Omega Fire Ministries Apostle Johnson Suleman calling on his church members to kill any Fulani herdsman that tries to attack them.

Open Letter to the Spiritual Director, Adoration Ministry, Enugu State, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka and the Founder, Synagogue Church Of All Nations, (SCOA) Pastor TB Joshua and other anointed men of God in Nigeria on the topic; “Hate sermons: Urgent need for prayers and understanding,” in the light of prevailing religious tensions In Nigeria.
My Dearest Lordships;

1. We send you fraternal and warm greetings from our secretariat in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and pray Almighty God to keep blessing you with strength and wisdom as you serve the quest of Nigerians and the rest of mankind for salvation.

2. By way of brief introduction, Center For Social Justice, Equity and Transparency (CESJECT) is a Non-governmental, Non-Profit, Non-partisan and Non-religious organization based in Nigeria. We are basically concerned with advocacy for social justice, equity and fairness as well as monitor ethics of transparency in public governance.

3. We have observed with bewilderment recent events in our dear country, Nigeria and after a thorough analysis, we have come to the painful conclusion that current happenings in Nigeria are quite unpleasant. And there is the imperative for collective actions to nip in the bud, any possibility of potential mass conflicts and crisis likely to sprout from it.

4. My Lordships, you are already aware Nigeria is on the cliffhanger at the moment; burdened by agitations, mutual distrust and suspicions, viral criminality as well as crises of all dimensions, which in some cases, have mutated into violent conflicts.

5. The federal government of Nigeria led by President Muhammadu Buhari has been strained and overstretched in its attempts to contain the crises in different parts of the country in the face of dwindling economic fortunes.

Therefore, we were perplexed to notice the infusion of a delicate and extremely sensitive issue like religion into the troubling afflictions of the country.

6. We consider it particularly very urgent to write you this open letter based on our understanding of your respectful status in Christendom in Nigeria.
We are equally encouraged by our implied assumption that you are aware of certain supposed “Men of God” who have stoke the fire of discord and overheated the polity with bile sermons, utterances and discussions from the pulpit which have a strong potency to spark religious crisis of genocidal magnitude in Nigeria.

7. Initially, this organization was not too worried with the divisions publicly manifest in the disorderliness, in-fighting and leadership tussles which have characterized the Body of Christ in Nigeria in recent times.
We had hoped the concerned leaders would devote time and energy to resolve these internal squabbles in the nearest future in the interest of Christianity.

8. But we cannot pretend not to know that this negative trend has not only spiraled outside of the Body of Christ in Nigeria, but pulling the strings very hard in attempts to destroy Nigeria by pitching members of one faith against another.

9. On the front burner of national issues today is the acerbic sermons and utterances credited to Apostle Johnson Suleiman of the Omega Ministries, which has generated very fearful and deadly interpretations between adherents of Christianity and Islam across the nooks and crannies of Nigeria. He is not alone in these hate and inciting sermons from the altar.

10. But Apostle Suleiman’s inciting comments happen to be the trouble at the moment. Initially, he opposed the Bill on prohibiting extreme religious views or preachment sponsored in Kaduna state and placed a curse of death on Governor Nasir el-Rufai. But it never bothered anybody because it had personal effect.
But invoking the powers of God Almighty to herd Christians into killing and beheading all Fulani herdsmen at sight is not only ungodly, but mocks the thinking of orthodox Christianity and reflects more the thoughts and actions of Nigeria’s external enemies bent on destabilizing the country by causing crisis of genocidal proportion in Nigeria, worse than Somalia or Sudan. In his latest outing, we can see a nexus in his still opposition to the Bill.

11. Calling for the mass killings of members of an ethnic group- the Fulani herdsmen, who pasture their cattle because of the transgressions of a few criminals suspected to be their kinsmen, is tantamount to exterminating a whole race.
This action would also be interpreted in Christian ethos as battling against flesh and blood, which true servants of God, (including you) have repeatedly warned us that we cannot win any war against the spirit.

12. Similarly, we deem it extremely bad faith the tendency of some anointed and venerated clergy, who are advocating for the extra-judicial killing of Boko Haram terrorists in the presumption that they launched war against Christianity. But the same Boko Haram insurgents also killed fellow Muslims in their rage of raids.

The bickering in the aftermath of the split in Boko Haram leadership between Abubakar Shekau and Abu Musab Al Barnewi sufficiently placed this notion in public domain. But in all, does it not betray the essence of being a good brother's keeper, love of neighbor and respect for sanctity of human life as decreed by God Almighty for anointed men of God to mount the pulpit to preach internecine wars with the religious card?

13. We believe Apostle Suleiman is acting the script of external enemies by inciting Christians in Nigeria into a religious war. And he goes further to blackmail the federal government into shielding himself by instigating Christians to perceive his impending arrest and interrogation by security agents to unearth the masked forces behind his actions as persecution of the church and Christians in Nigeria.

14. My Lordships, may you understand that it is germane for Apostle Suleiman and all other such “Men of God” to know they are not above laws of Nigeria and should be humble enough to submit themselves to security scrutiny. His confessions would either enable security agencies investigate and track people who are destabilization agents in Nigeria for external forces or exonerate him.

15. We plead your understanding in using your respected positions and statuses in talking to your congregations, adherents and followers not to be hoodwinked by the likes of Apostle Suleiman and such “Men of God” into deploying the anger they have deliberately instigated in Nigerian Christians to shield themselves from probe of their suspicious and ungodly acts.
16. We feel compelled to write you because of the respect, honour, integrity and acceptance you have earned amongst Christians and Muslims alike, within and outside Nigeria. We perceive in you, anointed men of God with the best credentials and wisdom to save the body of Christ at this crucial time on this sensitive, but potentially explosive religious incitement.

We are further encouraged by your non- discriminatory roles as father to both the orphans, the vulnerable and the widows, much as banking on your vast knowledge of humanitarian complexities countries face when such religious matters are allowed to explode in violent clashes to promptly.

17. If you kindly devote attention to this cause, you would save Nigeria from a clearly masterminded plot to destroy our country by enemies waiting in the wings to fuel genocide in the country on the platform of religion.
Acting thus, you shall also save the entire body of Christ from disintegrating and embarrassing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who laid down His life for us.

18. My Lordships’ would wish to remember that the break-up of Nigeria was predicted for 2015, but the Almighty God saw us through the trying times, but the same forces have not relented. Having studied the sociological psychology of Nigerians on religion, they have realized sparking a religions crisis would instantly actualize this prophesied break-up.
The devil is surely at work and we must put on our shield of prayers and not guns to overcome this moment of torment to defeat the devil and his agents.

19. My Lordships, God Almighty has bestowed the onus of avoiding the looming calamity in the land in your hands, as His ordained servants.

Please, do not let His children down, to inspire the Western world to laugh and mock us, by allowing the crisis to erupt. Your congregations and Nigerians indeed, listen and heed your words and advice, which beckons to your immediate intervention to save your dear country from ruination.
It will be unfortunate if Christians allow themselves to be used as the vehicle for bloodshed that would lead to genocide, hunger and suffering of the ordinary masses of Nigeria who are already pauperized and burdened in several ways.
20. We appreciate you for the time you have spared in reading this open epistle and we pray that may Almighty God give you the wisdom, foresight and strength to keep serving him and humanity in His Grace to the best of your ability.
21. Thank you very much and May Almighty God continue to bless you, Christians and the Church in Nigeria.

President Buhari has revealed when Recession will end

Recession will end in 2017 – President Buhari tells Nigerians President Buhari declares open Induction Course for Newly Appointed Career Ambassadors at the NIA Headquarters - The leader of the nation expressed optimism that in 2017 the external factors that partly contributed to push our economy into recession will ebb - He charged the ambassadors to change the narrative of Nigeria outside the country President Muhammadu Buhari has on December 19, Monday, said that Nigeria's recession will ease in 2017. Femi Adesina, presidential media aide, revealed this in a statement made available to newsmen. The president was speaking in Abuja while declaring open an induction course for Nigerian Career Ambassadors-designate who were recently cleared by the Senate. Buhari said: “We are optimistic that the external factors that partly contributed to push our economy into recession will ebb in 2017. Until then, I regret that the resources available to fund our missions abroad will not be as robust as we would like. “We are working hard to turn around our national economy by effectively reforming our macroeconomic environment through measures, some of which were outlined in my budget speech to the National Assembly last week.” The leader of the nation reminded the ambassadors-designate that: “as we are all making great sacrifices at home, we also expect you to similarly make judicious use of the resources put at the disposal of your missions. As Heads of missions, you will be held accountable for the utilisation of all resources under your control. These are lean times, and all of us are expected to do more with less.”
He particularly charged them to change the narrative of Nigeria outside the country by playing up the positive values and outstanding contributions of Nigerians in the global arena. “I want to emphasise your duty to change the narrative of Nigeria as seen by the outside world. For far too long, we have allowed Nigeria to be defined by others, always emphasizing our negatives. To the average foreigner, Nigeria evokes 419, terrorism, militancy, communal and religious clashes, insecurity, corruption and all our other faults,” the president said. “You have the duty to correct this narrative by taking the initiative to define and portray our country for what it truly is. We are a nation of 180 million vibrant, enterprising, hardworking, hospitable and peaceful people. We are a remarkable nation that has succeeded in harnessing our multiple diversities as strengths such that we are the leading country on the continent.
“Therefore, you will need to mobilise, sensitise and motivate all your staff so that together you engage with your host governments, the private sector and other segments of the society to explain that Nigeria is much more than the negative image portrayed to them.” President Buhari advised them to sustain the work ethic characterized by the love of country, professionalism, excellence, integrity and honour associated with the “Nigerian diplomatic tradition established in 1957 by the pioneers of the Nigerian Foreign Service, sometimes referred to as the “Twelve Apostles” and also “bequeath same to succeeding generations. ” “As Nigerian Ambassadors, you must set the standard of putting Nigeria first in all your actions. You must show leadership, fairness and justice to all. Discipline, probity, accountability and zero tolerance for corruption must be your watchwords. You are expected to project the best image and traditions of our country in your conduct and all you do.” In August, Nigeria 'lost its crown' as the largest economy in the region to South Africa after the International Monetary Fund worked out the sizes of the two economies using current exchange rates. The news was capped by the announcement on August 31 that Nigeria had officially entered recession after its economy contracted for the second consecutive quarter

MMM battles to console panic-gripped Nigerians

MMM on Tuesday, frozen by one month, payments of both capital and 30 per cent interest accruing to investors. The announcement jolted Nigerian investors and prompted an investor to contemplate suicide. A man in Makurdi in Benue state of Nigeria was reported to have ingested insecticide after he learnt of the development and was quickly rushed to the hospital. In order to forestall further negative reaction to the crash of the programme, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, has cautioned that suicide rate ‘may’ rise in the state. LASEMA gave the advice after a twitter user cautioned that suicide rates may increase in Lagos, due to the controversial ‘pause’ of the scheme. On its Twitter handle @lasemasocial, the LASEMA RESPONSE UNIT dropped an emergency number to call should any case of suicide arise in any part of the state. MMM freezes accounts as problems mount

Mavrodi Mondial Movement, known simply as MMM, has frozen accounts of participants, sparking fears that the Ponzi scheme has crashed. The Ponzi scheme, which has since been declared illegal by the Federal Government, in a message to participants, confirmed that it has frozen all accounts. It, however, insisted that the scheme had not crashed and that the accounts were being frozen for only one month to avoid challenges during the Yuletide. Dear Mavrodians, keep calm. MMM Nigeria has not and will not crash. This is a step in the right direction. Continue to PH as usual.
